The Thursday Update

When we hear the word “unfaithful,” we usually think of someone who has done something wrong. We think of betrayal, broken promises, dishonesty, disloyalty, or walking away when someone was counting on us. But what if unfaithfulness isn’t always about what we do wrong? Could it also be about what we fail to do?

 

Sometimes faithfulness means more than simply avoiding the wrong things. We can be given a responsibility and fail to fulfill it. We can be given an opportunity and let it pass. We can be entrusted with something valuable and never put it to use. We can know what God wants us to do and still choose to do nothing. In that sense, doing nothing can sometimes be its own form of unfaithfulness.

 

That raises an important question for everyone who follows Jesus: Am I being unfaithful to God, not because I’m doing something wrong, but because I’m not doing anything with what He has entrusted to me? This Sunday, we’ll look at what Jesus had to say about this in the Parable of the Bags of Silver.  We'll unpack that challenging question and discover what it means to live as a faithful follower of Jesus.
