He Is Nothing But The Truth

iGod: His Character Playlist, part 10 of 10
The final attribute of God that we will consider in this series is His truthfulness. God is truth. He doesn’t just tell the truth or speak the truth, He is the truth. Jesus, in describing himself, said He is the way and the truth and the life and that no one could come to the Father except through Him. Because God is truth, we can turn to Him for an accurate perspective on ourselves, on others and on our world. We will look at how God is truth, how Christ is truth, how the scriptures are truth and how the fact that God is truth can make an impact in our deceptive, dishonest world. And also how He can make an impact on our own lives as we strive to live truthfully and reflect His character of truthfulness.

I) Characteristics of Truth

Truth = ___Light___ : Lies = ___Darkness___

1) Satan – “father of lies” – has power over ___our deceptive world___.

“You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”
(John 8:44)

“‘Beware of your friends; do not trust your brothers. For every brother is a deceiver, and every friend a slanderer. Friend deceives friend, and no one speaks the truth. They have taught their tongues to lie; they weary themselves with sinning. You live in the midst of deception; in their deceit they refuse to acknowledge me,’ declares the LORD.
(Jeremiah 9:4-6)

2) God – who cannot lie – is the ___source of truth___ in our world.

“God is light; in Him there is no darkness at all.”
(1 John 1:5b)

“God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should change His mind.”
(Numbers 23:19a)

II) God’s Character of Truth

What does God’s Character of Truth tell us about God?

1) He has revealed Himself as ___He really is___.

“We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know Him who is true. And we are in Him who is true—even in His Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.”
(1 John 5:20)

2) He and His revelation are completely ___reliable___.

“God also bound himself with an oath, so that those who received the promise could be perfectly sure that He would never change His mind. So God has given both His promise and His oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to Him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us.”
(Hebrews 6:17-18, NLT)

3) He is ___completely consistent___ with Himself.

“Even if we are not faithful, He will remain faithful. He must be true to Himself.”
(2 Timothy 2:13, NIRV)

III) God, Truth, and Me

“How does God’s Character of Truth matter to me?”

1) The ultimate result of God being truth is ___eternal life through Jesus Christ___.

“And who can win this battle against the world? Only those who believe that Jesus is the Son of God. And Jesus Christ was revealed as God’s Son by his baptism in water and by shedding his blood on the cross—not by water only, but by water and blood. And the Spirit, who is truth, confirms it with his testimony. … Since we believe human testimony, surely we can believe the greater testimony that comes from God. And God has testified about His Son. All who believe in the Son of God know in their hearts that this testimony is true. Those who don’t believe this are actually calling God a liar because they don’t believe what God has testified about His Son. And this is what God has testified: He has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have God’s Son does not have life. I have written this to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know you have eternal life.”
(1 John 5:5-6,9-13, NLT)

2) Christians can confidently ___reflect God’s character of truth___ here and now.

“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) … Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to his neighbor, for we are all members of one body.”
(Ephesians 5:8-9, 4:25)
