God… Who Are You?

The key to making sense out of life is getting clear about who God is. Many people really don’t understand who God is. Some people see Him has a cosmic Santa Claus, others as a mean dictator or tyrant, still others think of Him as impersonal or simply a force. With all these various views of God, it is important that we get a proper perspective on Him. In the opening message of this series, we will take an overview of all the different ways people perceive God. Then look at the way in which God as revealed Himself accurately in the scriptures. In particular, we will take a look at His traits of eternality, of being one in tri-unity; His holiness, His infinite nature, and how these character traits form the hub of His other attributes.
“Moses said to God, ‘Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?’ God said to Moses, ‘I AM WHO I AM. I) COMMON MISUNDERSTANDINGS OF GOD
1) God is a gregarious ___GRANDPARENT___.
2) God is a strict ___SCHOOL TEACHER___.
3) God is a masterful ___MAGICIAN___.
4) God is an insensitive ___SCIENTIST___.
5) God is a supernatural ___SANTA CLAUS___.
II) DESIRING TO REALLY UNDERSTAND GOD
1) A complete understanding of God is ___IMPOSSIBLE___.
“Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me, if you understand.” (Job 38:4, NIV)
2) A growing understanding of God is ___THE GOAL OF LIFE___.
“I want to know Christ… becoming like Him…” (Philippians 3:10, NIV)
* Categories of understanding God:
i) By His names
ii) By His attributes or character
iii) By His essence or being
3) As we understand God, we better discern __LIFE’S MEANING_.
“Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble come and the years approach when you will say, ‘I find no pleasure in them.’” (Ecclesiastes 12:1, NIV)
III) THE ESSENCE OF WHO GOD REALLY IS
1) God is __SPIRIT__, so we can enjoy thrilling freedom in Him.
“God is spirit, and His worshippers must worship in spirit and in truth.” (John 4:24, NIV)
“Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” (2 Corinthians 3:17, NIV)
2) God is _ONE IN TRI-UNITY_, so we can know oneness with Him.
“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.” (Deuteronomy 6:4, NIV)
“Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, in our likeness…’” (Genesis 1:26a, NIV)
“There is one body and one Spirit— just as you were called to one hope when you were called— one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all.” (Ephesians 4:4-6, NIV)
3) God is ___ETERNAL___, so we can experience security in Him.

4) God is __INFINITE_, so we never face impossibilities with Him.
