Rest: If God Did It…
Weary No More, part 7 of 7
We live in a country that demands hard work and a fast paced living. That isn’t always bad but if we don’t ever take breaks in our schedule, our schedule will break us. Rest or vacation is so important that it is even one of the Ten Commandments. We will take a look at what God means by “rest” and explain all the ways we can experience rest in every dimension of our life.
“Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work… For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but He rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.” (Exodus 20:8-11, NIV)
I) THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE SABBATH
1) WHAT? The Sabbath is a day ___SET ASIDE FOR REST___.
Sabbath means “to cease”, “to desist”, “to stop”, “to rest”
2) HOW? The Sabbath was created ___BY GOD HIMSELF___.
“By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day He rested from all his work. And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it He rested from all the work of creating that He had done.” (Genesis 2:2-3, NIV)
3) WHY? The Sabbath was created __FOR PEOPLE’S BENEFIT__.
“Then Jesus said to them, ‘The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.’” (Mark 2:27, NIV)
*If you don’t take breaks in your schedule, your schedule ___WILL BREAK YOU___!
II) THE SATISFACTION OF SCHEDULED REST
How To Take Breaks In Your Schedule
1) Reflect ___DAILY___ on all that God has done for your life.
“Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.” (Exodus 20:8, NIV)
“God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.” (Genesis 1:31a, NIV)
“Oh, how I love your law! I meditate on it all day long.” (Psalm 119:97, NIV)
2) Relax ___WEEKLY___ by taking a day off from routine work.
“Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work…[the Lord] rested on the seventh day.” (Exodus 20:9-10a, NIV)
3) Recreate __ANNUALLY__ by enjoying what refills you inside.
“Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.” (Exodus 2:11b, NIV)
“There was a man…There was no end to his toil, yet his eyes were not content with his wealth. ‘For whom am I toiling,’ he asked, ‘and why am I depriving myself of enjoyment?’ This too is meaningless—a miserable business!” (Ecclesiastes 4:8, NIV)
4) Rest __ETERNALLY__ by trusting Jesus Christ’s “work” for you.
“Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ.” (Colossians 2:16-17, NIV)
“There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from his. Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall by following their example of disobedience.” (Hebrews 4:9-11, NIV)
