Just Lust?

Is lust all that harmful? Does sexual lust bring any harm or is it simply innocent fun that you can segment away from your everyday life? Or, as the old saying goes, is it true that is doesn’t matter where you get your appetite as long as you eat at home? In this message we will bring understanding that there is no such thing as just a little lust because it completely confuses healthy relational love (which is God’s original design), with unhealthy sexual lust (which reveals our own personal despair). After comparing the power of love and the weakness of lust, we will look at principles on how to leave your lust in the dust so that you can live a life of satisfying love.
I. Love: God’s relational design
1) Love is holistic, appreciating the total person.
“Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! It is amazing to think about. Your workmanship is marvelous.”

2) Love is satisfying, bringing about deep contentment.
“Love never fails.”

“Many waters cannot quench love; rivers cannot wash it away. If one were to give all the wealth of his house for love, it would be utterly scorned.”

3) Love is completing, freeing us to live in God’s love.
“No one has ever seen God, but if we love one another, God lives in us and His love is made complete in us.”

II. Lust: Our sexual despair
1) Lust is reductionary, focused on the physical.
2) Lust is progressive, always craving even more.
- The progression: First) Attraction
Then) Addiction
Then) Escalation
Then) Desensitization
Then) Emulation
3) Lust is crippling, enslaving and limiting our lives.
“But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin, and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death.”

III. Leaving your lust in the dust
1) Starve any lust patterns completely to death.
“If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.”

2) Substitute all lust thoughts with pure ones.
“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things.”

3) Support the progress made with growing people.
“Two people can accomplish more than twice as much as one; they get a better return for their labor. If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But people who are alone when they fall are in real trouble.”

4) Soak the truth of God’s Word in your heart.
“I have hidden Your Word in my heart that I might not sin against You.”
