A Not So Silent Night (Christmas Eve night service 7pm)
The Reason For The Season, part 4 of 4
One of the great Christmas hymns in the history of Christianity is Silent Night. The song speaks so much truth about the night that Christ was born, yet for some, the night was not–so–silent. In Luke 2:8–20 we see the actions of the shepards and the singing of the angels in reaction to the birth of Christ. Neither of them were very silent because of the special joy and excitement that accompanied this ultimate event. In this message, we will explain how there is a place for silence, quietness and reflection on Christmas, but there is also a place for us to be open, expressive and rejoicing publicly about the joys of the birth of Jesus Christ. We will present both views explaining practical ways that we can celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.

Christ’s birth was a time for humble reverence but was also a time for expressive joy! (Luke 2:13–38)
I. Angels: A colossal choir for Christ!
“Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying , ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.’” (Luke 2:13–14, NIV)
II. Shepherds: a satisfying song of Christ!
“The shepherds returned [from visiting the baby Jesus], glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.” (Luke 2:20, NIV)
III. Simeon: a “passing” praise to Christ!
“Simeon took him [Jesus] in his arms and praised God, saying : ‘Sovereign Lord, As you have promised, you now dismiss your servant in peace. For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of all people, a light of revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel.’” (Luke 2:28–32, NIV)
IV. Anna: a prayer proclaimed about Christ!
“Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.” (Luke 2:38, NIV)
V. US: An expressive witness of Christ’s love!
“When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child.” (Luke 2:17, NIV)
“But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord . Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect .” (1 Peter 3:15, NIV)
